The quizzes and polls corner - What camera shooting modes do you use?
May 18, 2007 by sil63
Before giving you the link to this week poll I’d like to summarize the basic shooting modes you’ll find on most point and shoot and DSRL cameras:
- Automatic Mode - This mode lets the camera take full control, you don’t have to set anything as it will judge by itself which settings are the best for the scene you are capturing. It’s a guess game so not all of your pictures may turn out as you wanted to. In order to give your camera a few more useful hints you may need to switch to these other modes: Portrait, Macro, Landscape, Sports, Night.
- Aperture Priority Mode (A or AV) - This is the one I use the most. It gives control on the aperture while the camera chooses the appropriate shutter speed. This way, by using a large or small number aperture, you can control depth of field.
- Shutter Priority Mode (S or TV) - It lets you set the shutter speed while your camera chooses the appropriate aperture. Useful when you want to use a fast shutter speed to freeze motion or a slower one to get an intentionally blurred image of a moving subject like water.
- Program Mode (P) - Some cameras have this mode in addition to Auto Mode. It allows you to set other features like ISO, white balance, and so on.
- Fully Manual Mode - As the name says, when using this mode you have full control over every setting of your camera. You need to be able to decide which aperture and shutter speed combination are the best for the kind of scene you are photographing. It’s a very flexible mode but it requires a bit more of experience and you need to really think your image before pushing the shutter button.
And now on to the poll !

On the cameras that I have that will allow it, fully manual mode. The camera that I use most often these days is only manual.
Thanks for information.
many interesting things
